The girls recorded a home win against Newtownbutler on Monday evening.
The game started at a frantic pace with both teams matching up well throughout the pitch and every ball well contested, Newtown took the lead with a well worked first point. The young Gaels girls responded by working hard, contesting every ball and putting the Newtown defence under pressure. Aiobheann Maguire always lively in the inside forward line got the the equalising score.
Newtown then went 1-2 up before Caodhla Stroud got 2 points without reply and the team started to find their rhythm. They played solid, attacking football, backed up by team captain, the ever reliable Sky Halligan wearing No6. The girls began to make their dominance count registering further scores through Megan Mullally, Maille Hennessy and Stroud again and half time came with a 6-3 score line.
The second half started much like the first, though the Gaels defence stood up well with Ella McAleer leading by example, bursting out with the ball and turning defence into attack. Saoirse Devine caused a real impact getting on the ball and delivering quality kicks to the forward line. Lillie Reilly scored a fine point followed up again by sharp shooters Hennessy and Stroud. Newtown certainly did not lie down and were always a threat in attack. Maguire got a goal for the Gaels quickly followed by a Newtown goal. By this stage both teams were using their bench well in the hot, sticky conditions.
The Gaels finished the game strong with a 12-7 score line. A fantastic well matched game of football played in a great spirit. The Girls look forward to playing Maguiresbridge away next time out….
